End-of-Life-Care
End-of-Life-Care, also known as Hospice, is not about dying; Hospice is about living until you die. This is the message Professionals should convey to clients and families. This care gives medical and spiritual support; the goal is to help people who are terminally ill to have peace, comfort and dignity. Hospice can be provided at home, a nursing home, hospice facility or wherever the client calls home.
A misconception about Hospice is that the client will be cut off from taking medication because they no longer need it. Keep in mind that an individual who receives Hospice care is to be made as comfortable as possible. If medication is something that the client wants to continue to receive, the client should be allowed access.
According to Ms. Connie Dunn, Chaplain, VNA Hospice of Western, PA, "Hospice care helps make for a peaceful death due to a philosophy of caring and helping people to be in the moment and having the broad network of support during their physical, emotional and spiritual needs."
Professionals who provide Hospice Care live everyday in the end stages of people's lives; Professionals have the resources, ideas and courage to be with people in that moment.
